December, 1973 - Carolyn Crayton and Blythe McKay attended the Keep America Beautiful, Inc.(KAB) Convention in New York City. At this convention the nation's Clean Community System was introduced, the result of a study conducted for KAB by Human Resources Institute of Morristown, New Jersey. Macon's delegates talked with officials there and found out that Macon could be considered for one of the test cities. They came home and spread their enthusiasm.

Carolyn Crayton was asked to be the Executive Director.

In February of 1974, KAB officials came to Macon, GA and discussed the new project entitled "Behavioral Aspects of Pollution Control" with business men and city and county officials in the C&S Bank board room as well as members of the Macon-Bibb County Beautification Commission.

March, 1974 - Macon chosen one of three cities in the country to participate in a national litter reduction experiment conducted by KAB. ( Other two cities were Tampa, Florida and Charlotte, N.C.). Bibb County Commission unanimously agreed to allocate $15,000 toward implementation of the experiment and Macon City Council agreed to allocate $15,000.

Macon, Georgia officially adopted the Keep America Beautiful, Inc (KAB) program - appointing an 18 member board.

June 21, 1974 - Article appeared in Macon Telegraph Editorial page: "U.S. Watches Macon in Anti-Litter Drive." Article said: What happens in Macon, Georgia, a frontier area for a national program, will be studied and implemented in other communities throughout the nation.

June 1974 - The board changed from an 18 member board to a 28 member board.

March 1975 - Tax office worked with Clean Community Commission and gave away litter-bags, "Pitch In" to all residents buying car tags.

March 21, 1975 - First Birthday luncheon meeting - 100 attended and awards, citations and certificates were given.

In 1976 - Beautification was added to our Litter Reduction program.

In 1980 - Energy Conservation was added.

In 1982 - The Macon Cherry Blossom Festival was founded under the auspices of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission as its beautification project to showcase the beauty of Macon's Yoshino     cherry trees.  

      

1992 - Recycling and Home Composting became the center of our waste minimization program.

1993 - Curbside Recycling began in the city and in the county.

2000 - Revision of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission's (KMBBC) logo to feature Fort Hawkins                 and a cluster of three cherry blossoms.  Artist - Dee Ann Dupree Heidler.

2001 - ALLEN G FREEMAN named Executive Director of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission

         and President/CEO of Cherry Blossom Festival.

2002 - Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission (KMBBC) Website was designed by MyLink;

          sponsored by Atlanta Gas Light Company.

2003 - Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission became a stakeholder with Middle Georgia                     Clean Cities Coalition.

          

2004 - L.WRIGHT TILLEY named President/CEO of Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission/

           Cherry Blossom Festival (July 7, 2004).

 

Our first litter reduction was 11%; our second count was 22%.

These were followed by 44%, 66%, and it went as high as 82% litter reduction.

National Litter Index Survey instituted in 2000.
